Homemade Wontons

Being in quarantine has made me become creative in the kitchen and try new recipes. Here’s a fun, and delicious meal of homemade shrimp wontons. I started off by following a recipe but ended up taking away/adding my own ingredients. I also made a small portion of vegetarian wontons (instructions at the end). This was my first time making them on my own and they turned out great!

Ingredients:

*makes 45 wontons (I made a lot and froze some, but if you are making less, half these measurements!

shrimp wonton ingredients
  • 1 cup cabbage, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon pepper
  • 5 stalks of scallions, finely chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon ginger, minced
  • One egg
  • 1 pound shrimp, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon corn starch
  • wonton wrappers (I used square-shaped)

How to Make Them:

  1. In a bowl, put the chopped shrimp, scallions, cabbage, garlic, ginger, corn starch, salt and pepper and stir well. This is your filling.
  2. Crack an egg in bowl and add a tablespoon of water. This is your egg wash and “glue” to stick your wontons together
  3. On a tray, take your wonton paper and lay it in a diamond shape. Add a small teaspoon of filling to the center (be sure not to overfill!)
  4. Dip your finger in the egg wash and add a small amount to two edges of the paper
  5. Fold the top of the wonton paper down to stick to the egg wash to create a triangle
  6. Using your fingers, remove all air bubbles, securing the filling in place and flattening the triangle
  7. Take two ends of the triangle and fold them upwards, attaching them to the top point using the egg wash and securing it in place
  8. Continue with the rest of the wonton papers until the filling is done
Step-by-step how to fold the paper

Ready to Cook

Once the wontons are filled and folded, they are ready to cook!

I took a large pan and added olive oil. On high heat, I placed all the wontons next to each other and let them cook until the pan heated up and the wontons began to cook. Then I poured in water and closed the lid, allowing the wontons to steam. You’ll notice the wontons beginning to expand and puff. I left them in the steaming pan with the lid on, adding water when it evaporated for about 12 minutes.

How to Make the Sauce

While the wontons are steaming, now you can make the chili sauce!

Ingredients:

  • Soy sauce
  • Olive oil
  • Red wine vinegar
  • Garlic
  • Sugar
  • Red pepper flakes or dried red chillies

In a jar, mix the soy sauce, red wine vinegar, garlic, sugar and red pepper flakes to your own taste. I didn’t measure these ingredients out since I made it to taste.

Ready to Eat!

Now that the wontons are cooked and your sauce is made, it’s time to eat! In a bowl put desired number of wontons, and pour the chili sauce on top. Enjoy!

Vegetarian Wontons

I also made a few vegetarian wontons and used all the same ingredients, except replaced the shrimp with red peppers.
